On December 15, 2025, the Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (UAESCSI) hosted a virtual symposium dedicated to "Water and Energy Security in the Arab World."
The meeting was chaired by Professor Mohamed Boukhari, President of both the National Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (NESEC) and the Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (UAESCSI). The session was attended by the Union's Vice-President, concurrently President of the Economic and Social Council of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, alongside representatives of the heads of the Economic and Social Councils of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the Lebanese Republic, and the Republic of Tunisia.
The session opened with a presentation by the Economic and Social Council of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on “Water Security in the Arab World,” which highlighted the current status as well as the immediate and future challenges facing Arab states, while offering a number of recommendations to address them.

On the subject of energy security in the Arab world, the NESEC of Algeria delivered a presentation outlining the principal challenges facing the sector, opportunities to strengthen regional energy security, and the central role expected of UAESCSI in this domain, while outlining several key recommendations to address them.
The study day formed part of the Union’s agreed action plan aimed at strengthening coordination and consultation among Arab countries regarding water and energy security.
In this context, the President of the Union stressed the need to reinforce cooperation among Arab economic and social councils and similar institutions and to harmonize perspectives in order to formulate practical, targeted proposals capable of effectively supporting public policy across the Arab world.
The study day concluded with an address by the President of the Union, who called for a deeper commitment to consultation and coordination on these two strategic priorities.
During the first quarter of 2026, the Algerian National Economic, Social and Environmental Council and its counterpart from Jordan submitted their respective reports to the Union's General Secretariat, prior to their presentation for formal adoption at the upcoming General Assembly.
As part of the implementation of the roadmap adopted by the Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions, two reports have been drafted in alignment with the strategic pillars of the 2022–2025 mandate. These pillars focus on water, energy and food security, falling under the broader themes of economic sovereignty and sustainable development. The drafting of these reports follows a virtual workshop held on December 15, 2025:
The first report, titled "Energy Security in Arab Countries," by the Algerian National Economic, Social and Environmental Council;
The second report, focusing on "Water Security in the Arab World," by the Jordanian Economic and Social Council.
The objective of these studies is to gain a clearer understanding of the realities surrounding water and energy security in the Arab world. Both issues are recognized as vital strategic challenges that directly impact the future of sustainable development across our countries, with a view to drawing on successful experiences and best practices in these two fields.
